MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, PARADISE:

In the darkness of my early morning drive to Mount Rainier, a thrill of anticipation coursed through me. The sun was still a couple of hours from revealing its golden rays over Paradise, yet the magic of the moment was palpable. Each breath of the crisp morning air filled me with gratitude, setting the tone for a day dedicated to exploration. Today, I embarked on a journey, not just through the breathtaking trails, but also within my soul. Embracing the unexpected, I found myself drawn to the warmth of nature’s embrace, even before I set foot on the official path. The closed gate at Longmire couldn’t deter my spirit; instead, it opened a door to new reflections, reminding me that life often unfolds in ways we least expect.

With the Wonderland Trail beneath my feet, I felt the pulse of the earth reverberating through the snow. It was a dance with the elements, where each crunch of snow underfoot harmonized with the gentle whispers of the nearby creek. The solitude of my hike was interrupted only by the laughter of fellow adventurers as I returned to the gate, each awaiting access. Once at Paradise I immediately began to navigate the terrain in my new snowshoes, I was reminded of life’s delicate balance—its twists, turns, and the awe-inspiring challenges we face. Each step became a meditation, an opportunity to pause and soak in the grandeur of Mount Rainier, encouraging me to embrace every moment with each step, and clumsy extended shoes. My heart swelled with appreciation as I reached Glacier Vista, where the breathtaking panorama reminded me that the journey is as beautiful as the destination itself.

Reflecting on today’s experiences, I realized how deeply intertwined gratitude and authenticity are in my life. I had once been shackled by the weight of expectations, meticulously crafting my identity around achievements, titles, and interests. Yet, hiking today, I stripped away those layers, allowing my true self to emerge in the simplicity of the moment. The trail mirrored my journey towards self-discovery, each step a reminder that growth doesn’t need to be complicated. As I celebrated my purpose rather than fixating on labels and outcomes, I found peace in the realization that every moment is an opportunity for renewal. In the serene beauty of nature, I embraced a new mantra: to live authentically, to cherish connection, and to savor unexpected moments—each twist and turn leading me closer to who I truly am.

The Journey…

The sun was still a couple of hours away from casting its rays over Paradise on Mount Rainier as I approached the closed gate at Longmire—11 miles from the trailhead. My heart raced with anticipation at 6:30 AM, the chill in the air invigorating against my skin. Adventure was calling, but with the gate locked until 9 AM, I decided to make the most of my time and set off on the Wonderland Trail, enveloped by darkness like a cozy blanket yet to find its warmth. The crunch of snow beneath my boots echoed in the stillness, harmonizing with the gentle murmur of a nearby creek. The fresh scent of snow filled the air, each breath a reminder of nature’s serene beauty. My headlamp cast a soft glow over the trail, blanketed in white, demanding careful footing. Yet, the thrill of being out here before the world awoke filled me with gratitude, each moment a precious gift.

After returning from a couple of miles on the Wonderland Trail, the gate finally opened, clearing a path to the Skyline Trail. Strapping on my snowshoes at the trailhead, I felt both excitement and trepidation; this was my first time navigating terrain in snowshoes. Walking in 26-inch shoes felt like a toddlers first steps—clumsy yet exhilarating. My heart raced with the effort, and I found myself pausing often, taking in the dazzling scenery around me. The brilliant blue sky stretched endlessly above, contrasting sharply with the pristine white snow, while the sounds of fellow adventurers gliding past on cross-country skis added a layer of liveliness to the serene scene. Each stop became a mini-celebration where I could soak in the grandeur of Mount Rainier, its majestic presence a constant companion, urging me to keep climbing, one careful step at a time.

Reaching Glacier Vista was the moment of fulfillment for today. I paused to gaze at the hikers traversing around the summer trail, and some daringly heading straight up to Panorama Point while I chose to linger. The distant sound of sizable tumbling rocks echoed through the vast glacier void, a reminder of the mountain’s raw power. Finding the perfect spot, I slipped off my snowshoes and pack, leaning back against a rock. I closed my eyes, letting the sun’s warmth wash over me. When I finally opened them, the view greeted me and took my breath away—the Cascades stretched majestically before me, a stunning panorama I would never forget. As I descended later in the afternoon, the fulfillment of the day etched memories in my mind, a symphony of sensations that would linger long after I left the mountain.

Gratitude…

Today, my gratitude took a turn for the unexpected moments when plans go awry. As I drove through the stillness of the early morning, my heart was full of anticipation, hoping for a perfect sunrise at Mount Rainier. The quiet roads felt like a sacred space, guiding me towards my adventure. I had envisioned ascending the skyline loop with my new snowshoes, feeling the thrill of winter on the trails after a recent series of urban hikes. But as I approached Longmire, a closed gate greeted me like goal-line defense, reminding me that nature has its own schedule. Instead of letting disappointment seep in, I chose to pivot. I ventured onto the Wonderland Trail, retracing steps I’d taken before. In the darkness, I felt the pulse of the earth beneath my boots, a grounding reminder of the unexpected joys that come from staying present in the moment.

As I hiked, the world around me began to wake up, slowly revealing its beauty. After a mile or so, I turned back, making my way to the parking lot where others had gathered, all waiting for the gate to open. It was a small community of diverse souls, each with their own stories and aspirations for the day. I listened to snippets of their conversations—some filled with excitement, others tinged with apprehension. In that shared space, I felt a profound connection, a reminder that we’re all navigating our own paths, often veering off course yet finding beauty in the detours. This was my jolt of awareness: I was truly living in that moment. Embracing the unexpected filled me with a sense of calm, transforming any disappointment into gratitude. I left with a new question on my heart: “How can I make unexpected experiences like this one into something special?” This shift in perspective can turn otherwise disappointing experiences into something pleasantly unexpected.

Reflections…

This morning’s hike was a beautiful reminder of the value of simplicity in life. Not too long ago, I was caught in a whirlwind of complex goal-setting and intricate plans. In-fact, I’ve lived most of my life that way. Every detail of my life felt meticulously crafted, each goal a piece of an elaborate puzzle. While those moments brought validation and a sense of accomplishment, they also shackled my identity to external markers—my job title, things I liked to do, and roles I’ve filled. I was identifying with labels that felt temporary, or perhaps not representative of who I really was. Today, as I hiked the snow-covered trail, I could sense the crisp air urging me to strip away those layers and embrace a more authentic existence—or at least a more accurate description of that existence.

My approach to life has shifted dramatically. Instead of being tethered to rigid structures, I find myself asking in-the-moment questions that are aligned with my core values and virtues I hold dear. For instance, rather than fixating on steps, reps, or calories, I focus on the simple act of engaging with my body. That small shift—choosing to celebrate my purposeful efforts rather than obsess over outcomes—has been liberating. If I’m being honest in my efforts, the outcomes follow with no need for validation or accolades. I learned that I don’t need to wait for the “perfect” moment to start anew; every single moment is a fresh opportunity. I don’t need to wait for that next marker (like Monday) to start again. If I stumble, I give myself grace. Today, I felt that grace as I made my way along the trail, each step a reminder that I can just keep moving, and keep living.

When people ask me, “Who are you?” it’s a question that once felt daunting. I would feel the pressure to offer an answer, even if surface-level, or maybe present a polished version of myself, laden with titles and achievements. But as I hiked today, I pondered a response that resonates more profoundly with my authentic self. I value gratitude, humility, and connection, and I strive to embody empathy and care. But what I truly want is to be genuine—no pretenses, no masks. It dawned on me that my answer doesn’t need to be complex; it can be simple and inviting, reflecting the essence of who I am without overwhelming others with a philosophical exercise.

In distilling my identity, I found a more straightforward yet meaningful description: “I’m someone who values connection and growth.” This simple phrase opens the door to deeper conversations without the weight of philosophical complexities. As I tread the snow beneath my snowshoes, I felt the joy of embracing life, one moment at a time. It’s refreshing to connect with others without feeling the need to impress; I can simply share my journey and invite others to share theirs. The trail became a metaphor for my life—each step forward an opportunity to connect, grow, and live authentically.

Today’s hike, surrounded by nature’s beauty, reminded me that growth doesn’t need to be complicated. Each twist and turn of the trail mirrored the complexities of life, yet I realized that living in alignment with my values simplifies everything. It’s about creating space for authenticity, allowing my true self to shine through. As I walked, I felt a profound sense of peace, knowing that I am on a journey to embrace simplicity, gratitude, and authenticity. I’m thinking that life, in its essence, becomes more beautiful when we allow ourselves to just be. The path continues.
