Memoir of Gratitude

There’s something about the trail that keeps calling me back.

Maybe it’s the quiet. Maybe it’s the way the road hums beneath my tires while the rest of the world is still half asleep. Out here in the Pacific Northwest, I’ve spent a lot of mornings chasing trailheads through rain, fog, and darkness, carrying a single thought with me on the trail just to see what rises to the surface by the time I make it back home.

What it’s become is something harder to name. A map, maybe. One I’m still drafting.

Memoir of Gratitude grew out of these miles. Part trail journal, part reflection, part attempt to make sense of the things that shape my life. I write about hikes, gratitude, reflections, and the quieter questions that seem to show up somewhere between the trees. After a brief introduction, each entry opens with The Journey… the sights and sounds alive on the trail and the feelings they stir. Then Gratitude… the moments that arrive on my drives, reminding me of the blessings tucked into ordinary days. And finally Reflections… the deeper insights that surface as I sit with the trail-thought I carried with me.

These trails have a way of asking questions I didn’t know I needed to answer.

Life has taken me on an unexpected journey, one marked by the loss of my wife, Kelly. She was my partner in life’s adventures and my closest friend. The trails give me space to muse without having to explain myself. They remind me that life keeps moving, even when your heart wants time to stop for a beat. Somewhere along the way, gratitude stopped feeling like an idea and became something essential. Not forced optimism. Just learning to notice the little things that matter.

I’ve always believed the best parts of life are found in genuine connection, quiet presence, and the silent moments that carry weight without asking for anything. A shared laugh and the kind of conversation where nobody’s pretending to be anything other than themselves. I think purpose often hides inside ordinary moments like that.

This space is also about growth. Not the polished kind we sometimes perform for each other, but the more subtle kind that comes from being vulnerable and paying attention. I’m still learning how to live with intention, how to stay curious, and how to hold both gratitude and longing at the same time without needing to resolve either one too quickly.

So this is where I leave pieces of the journey. My experiences. My gratitude. My thoughts. The reflections that surfaced somewhere along the path. Not solved. Just… shared.

I’m not here to hand anyone a lesson. I’m here because writing it down is how I keep finding my footing, and because sometimes the right words at the right moment matter more than we realize. If something here lands for you, I’m glad you found it.

Wander. Ponder. Be grateful.

    Dedication

My reflections primarily take place in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, but it feels right to begin with the heart of my inspiration. My wife and best friend, Kelly, departed this world on July 15, 2024, surrounded by her family after bravely enduring a prolonged battle with cancer. Her final journey began on her 50th birthday…
