MERRILL LAKE WILDLIFE AREA, WA:
Just before dawn broke over the horizon, a soft magic lingered in the air, hinting at the adventures to come. Today, I found myself drawn to Kalama Falls, eager to breathe in the cool morning air and listen to the soft echoes of a wilderness that experienced its share of chaos nearly a half century ago. There’s something sacred about these early hours, a tranquil stillness that invites introspection. With each mile on the road, the darkness slowly gave way to light, prompting reflections of gratitude that warmed my heart. It’s never just a hike; it’s a soulful journey, a harmonious dance with nature and mindfulness. Each twist and turn on the trail mirrors the complexities of life, while every breathtaking view invites those precious moments of reflection ignited by curiosity and creativity.

Arriving at the trailhead, I laced up my boots, feeling a mix of excitement and anticipation for the journey ahead. With each step along the path, I couldn’t help but reflect on the resilience found within both nature and myself. As I ventured deeper into the forest, the symphony of birds mingled with the soothing sounds of cascading water, creating a soundtrack that fueled my thoughts. I found myself pondering the challenges I face, both on the trail and in life, recognizing how each obstacle shapes my understanding of the beauty in truly living rather than just existing. Standing in awe before the thunder of Kalama Falls, I was reminded that even the most powerful forces of nature are molded by time and resilience, much like our own journeys.

As I hiked, I paused to record thoughts in my trail journal, capturing the essence of these reflections. In the serene embrace of the forest, I was gently reminded that these hikes are much more than mere physical pursuits; they present profound lessons in gratitude and self-awareness. Each reflection becomes a delicate thread woven into the tapestry of my experiences, illuminating the connections that truly enrich my life. This journey serves as a heartfelt reminder that the paths we choose, whether through nature or in our daily routines, can lead us to moments of clarity and inspiration, as long as we grant ourselves the grace to reflect and grow.

The Journey…
I set out for Kalama Falls just as the sun began to rise. I felt the cool morning air wrap around me, nipping at my fingertips since I had only come prepared with my fingerless gloves. By 7 AM, I had laced up my boots, filled with anticipation to experience the roughly seven-mile trail that lay ahead in the Merrill Lake Wildlife Area, which reminded me of the rainforest. Parking was a bit of a puzzle; the absence of a designated lot led me to find a spot on the roadside, guided by a thoughtfully placed glove on a small tree that marked the trailhead. As I embarked, the trail quickly revealed itself as a well-maintained path, primarily soft underfoot, even as I gently navigated around the occasional fallen tree or muddy patch. My surroundings were a festival for the senses; moss of every shade carpeted the ground and draped from the trees, creating a scene that felt almost otherworldly and offered a warm embrace to anyone who ventured here.

Venturing deeper into the forest, I was entertained by the soothing melodies of nearby birds and comforted by the gentle whispers of the wind and the rhythmic sound of my footsteps, while anticipating the arrival of the distant sound of water. Just over a mile in, the thunderous roar of the first tier of the Kalama Falls beckoned me away from the main path. Drawn by that enchanting sound, I soon found myself gazing upon a truly magnificent sight. The falls tumbled into a crystal-clear basin, and as the cool mist touched my face, I felt an overwhelming sense of connection with nature. In that moment, I was deeply grateful for the detour. After moments of reflection I returned to the main trail, and continued on, captivated by the vibrant hues of moss and the remnants of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. The landscape, marked by the scars of its past, stood as a powerful testament to resilience, as life slowly but surely reclaimed its rightful space.

Approaching the second tier of the falls, I found myself at the top. With careful footing I navigated a series of switchbacks that led me to the base. These falls were even more impressive than the first, with its water crashing down into another stunning basin. I paused for a moment to soak in the view, feeling a profound mix of exhilaration and respect for the incredible power of nature. It struck me how small we are in the grand scheme of things, yet how connected we feel in these moments. On my way back, I encountered a fellow hiker and a couple of friendly forest service officials, which only deepened the sense of camaraderie that thrives along these trails. We all shared an unspoken understanding that we are part of something much larger, a gentle reminder that nature has a unique way of uniting us all.

As I completed my hike, an overwhelming sense of peace enveloped me. This journey had offered nourishment for my body, mind, and soul, an experience I’ve grown to cherish. With each step, I felt a connection to the earth, inhaling the comforting scents of moss and dirt, and delighting in the gentle touch of ferns and trees as I passed by. Returning to my car, my heart was filled with gratitude, fully aware that these precious moments in nature were what truly rejuvenated my spirit.

Gratitude…
The early morning air was crisp as I embarked on my drive to Kalama Falls. With each mile traveled in the morning darkness, I found myself reflecting on gratitude, a practice that feels especially poignant in these quiet moments. As if to remind myself that life is full of twists, my route took an unexpected turn; I-5 South was closed due to road work, leading me down winding backroads through Dupont. While such detours can be frustrating, I choose to see them as integral to this adventure we call life. The dense fog enveloped my car, creating a mystical atmosphere that felt almost dreamlike, gently nudging me to slow down and fully absorb the peace surrounding me.

Listening to the book Theo of Golden transformed this drive into something much more profound than just a commute; it became a cherished experience inspired by thoughtful friends who gifted me the book. Receiving two copies from two different friends almost at the same time this week felt like more than coincidence. It’s a humbling reminder that I am truly seen and appreciated. Their kindness touched me deeply, reinforcing my belief in the extraordinary power of human connection. As Theo uncovers the stories behind the portraits hanging on the walls in a local coffeehouse, I found myself reflecting on the parallels in my own life and the vital importance of recognizing and honoring those around us. This journey evolved into something much more than merely reaching my next trailhead; it was a celebration of the beautiful bonds we share, filling my heart with gratitude for those who genuinely take the time to understand and uplift others.

Arriving at the trailhead just as the first light spilled over the horizon, I felt a sense of peace. The anticipation of the hike ahead mingled with the warmth from the gratitude in my heart. This experience, fueled by the kindness of others, reminds me why I seek these moments: to connect with the world, reflect on the gift of friendship, and to honor the relationships that enrich my life. Stepping onto the trail, I embraced not only the thrill of the journey ahead but also an appreciation for the thoughtful gestures that illuminate our days when we least expect it.

Reflections…
As I set out on my hike this morning, the sun began to rise, painting everything in a warm golden glow, pushing up through the deep blue sky. It was one of those serene moments when I felt completely connected to nature, and my mind drifted into a reflective trail-thought. I considered those fleeting instances when everything appears perfectly aligned, moments that invite us to reflect and break from our daily routines. They awaken a curiosity that encourages us to explore the deeper meaning of our lives. I view these moments as the crossroads between curiosity and creativity, where the ordinary fades away, allowing us to fully appreciate the beauty surrounding us, a courageous moment that empowers us to question what often feels unquestionable.

I’ve had moments like these on my more challenging hikes, where exhaustion and the presence of majestic views meet. It’s physically and emotionally disarming. In those moments, I can’t help but reflect on the routines that often dictate my days, the relentless hustle that pulls my attention away from what truly matters. It serves as a poignant reminder that life isn’t solely about going through the motions; it’s about embracing the feelings that make us truly alive in those precious moments. Those times when everything feels just right prompting us to make promises to ourselves, to seek out these experiences with more regularity. Moments that genuinely nourish our hearts and souls.

Reflecting on these moments had reminded me of the vital importance of staying open to curiosity and creativity. I’ve come to understand that when I wholeheartedly embrace the world around me, I create a space where I can be critical on how I spend my time, with creativity that flows without restriction. I can recall those times when inspiration hit me, whether it was while enjoying live music or during long drives when my mind can wander freely. Each of these experiences can jolt me out of my routine, emphasizing how essential it is to break free from mundane patterns and to give ourselves permission to explore, create, and grow.

But I also recognize that these moments cannot be forced; they flourish in the gentle spaces where we permit ourselves the freedom to breathe and reflect. This morning, I felt a deep understanding of how essential it is to cultivate these environments and conditions. Many of my most profound insights arise during those serene moments nestled between the demands of life. These are the moments that allow for ample space and time, rather than being crammed into a 15-minute task; when I finally disconnect from my routine, that’s when the beautiful things begin to emerge. This is the challenge we face: to intentionally seek out significant, uninterrupted pockets of time for reflection and growth, in spaces that genuinely foster curiosity and creativity.

As I concluded my hike, I made a commitment to cherish both space and time. I understand that time can be enriched by seeking out experiences that resonate deeply within me; whether that be discovering new trails, enjoying live music, embarking on long drives, savoring the peacefulness of a nine-inning baseball game, or even pulling weeds. To give myself permission to let my mind wander and stay curious. By creating room for reflection and welcoming change, I can cultivate a life where those precious moments of clarity and inspiration are woven into my journey. The path continues.
